The Vashon Nature Center (VNC) at Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA)
Along the east side of the VCA campus lies Heron Meadow - a joint restoration project that is accessible to the entire Vashon Island community, and serves as the Vashon Nature Center’s field-based office, research lab, and outdoor classroom.
The key focus of the Nature Center is to foster healthy human connections with the land, water, and wildlife of the Salish Sea region through community-based science, education, and research. Just taking a walk through Heron Meadow offers an opportunity to connect with nature and one another through the shared wonder of being in the natural world.
Since 2019, the Vashon Center for the Arts and the Vashon Nature Center have worked together to restore this two-and-a-half-acre wetland meadow forming the eastern headwaters of our island’s largest salmon-bearing creek. Together, our organizations have turned a field of invasive weeds into a native wildlife sanctuary and community gathering space.
Now and in the future, Heron Meadow welcomes student groups who visit to learn about the interconnectedness of the world and to assist with ongoing restoration. Community members converge here to take walks or meet under the sky. The meadow continues to be a teaching tool and has now evolved into a beloved community resource.
