Born on the island of São Nicolau in Cabo Verde, Lucibela grew up steeped in the musical traditions of one of the world's most distinctive archipelagos. From singing in island hotels to performing at the Atlantic Music Expo and WOMEX — two of the world's most prestigious world music showcases — her rise has been swift and well-deserved.
Widely acclaimed as the heir to the legendary Cesária Évora, Lucibela has made that comparison her own. She possesses a truly magnificent voice — liquid and effortless across a wide vocal range — and brings it to bear on two deeply rooted Cape Verdean genres: morna, the melancholic ballad form with echoes of Portuguese fado, and coladera, its more buoyant, rhythmic counterpart. Together they carry the spirit of sodade — the Cape Verdean word for a longing so profound it has no direct English translation.
Her newest album features previously unreleased songs by celebrated Cape Verdean composers alongside reimagined classics, continuing her mission to carry this irreplaceable musical tradition to stages around the world. An evening with Lucibela is, simply put, a rare and beautiful thing.
