Join Vashon artist Ela Lamblin for conversation about the vision, creative process, and extraordinary problem-solving behind Singer, the monumental kinetic gray whale sculpture suspended in the VCA Atrium.
Commissioned by Vashon Nature Center, Singer incorporates the recovered bones of the 40-foot gray whale who washed ashore on Vashon in 2024, bringing together sculpture, movement, engineering, and natural history in a work unlike a traditional museum articulation. Lamblin will share how the project evolved—from imagining how to give the whale a sense of life and motion to collaborating with engineers, fabricators, and volunteers to make that vision possible.
Lamblin is a Vashon-based sculptor, musician, designer, and longtime creator of kinetic and large-scale public art. A graduate of the Atlanta College of Art with a BFA in sculpture, his multidisciplinary work has long explored the intersection of sculpture, sound, movement, performance, and the natural world.
