From 1909 to 1929, impresario Serge Pavlovich Diaghilev directed the Ballets Russes, a dance company that revolutionized early twentieth century arts, producing groundbreaking spectacles such as The Firebird and the scandalous Rite of Spring. Diaghilev collaborated with composers such as Stravinsky, dancers such as Nijinsky, and visual artists including Bakst, Picasso and Matisse to make ballet a truly modern art.
