Each June, VCA's Center for Dance program presents a brand-new, full-scale production that celebrates our training and artistry. The Blue Heron Dance Company—supported by all of the students in our dance program—brings a story to life through ballet, modern, contemporary, lyrical, jazz, and tap. Inspired by ancient myths, original stories, or fresh interpretations of classic themes, every Spring Concert showcases original choreography, dazzling costumes, and the technical and artistic achievements of our dancers.

Wonderland: Rise of the Queen

In the Royal Garden of Wonderland, an unexpected visitor tumbles in: Alice. In pursuit of a frantic White Rabbit, she stumbles into a high-stakes gathering of Wonderland’s Electoral College, the calculating Dealer, and four very different Queens who are each a legitimate candidate for the empty throne. What begins as a tea party quickly unravels into chaos as alliances form, rivalries ignite, and a quiet conspiracy begins shaping the outcome before a single vote is cast.
Spectacle momentarily replaces turmoil as each Queen presents her case in a dazzling courtly display where order, chaos, vanity, and passion take center stage. The Dealer oversees the election, determined to follow the rules. When the elegant Queen of Diamonds is declared the winner, the Mad Hatter contests, and a questionable recount shifts the crown to the Queen of Hearts. But as she ascends the throne and makes her first chilling decree - “Off with his head!” - it becomes clear that power corrupts, and Wonderland is left on familiarly uncertain ground."
