Garden #4

Address provided with ticket purchase

Cathy Sarkowsky’s beach garden on Quartermaster Harbor is an artist’s garden, not one that is tidy and orderly but “a little crazy and wild” just as the owner likes it.

At the entrance to the property, the rich colors and textures of yellow twig dogwoods, mahonia and ferns set the tone. The east courtyard’s raised beds are filled with flowers throughout the spring and summer months. Hostas, ferns and other shade-loving plants thrive on the north side of the garden, while the sunny side is home to bamboo and raised beds for vegetables and herbs. The garden overlooking Quartermaster Harbor, with its bluestone terrace and masses of heather, perennials and ornamental grasses, is a favorite place to entertain. There are interesting combinations of drought-tolerant plants, such as sedums, berberis, salvias, spirea, rudbeckias and carexes. This low-maintenance and drought-tolerant garden leaves Sarkowsky time to spend in her studio, which will be open to visitors during the weekend. Plein air painters will be at work in the garden.
