Garden #2

Mary and Eric Walker’s five-acre garden is now 28-years old. The East Garden is home to witch hazel and vine maples, with beds that showcase a mix of ferns, heuchera and mahonia. The “Secret Sun Garden” patio offers a lovely view north across a ravine. Trails through the trees give visitors a chance to look up into the arms of the big leaf maples coated with moss and the curving, tangled limbs of enormous cedars.

Mary said they “try to visually blend whatever we plant into the surrounding native plants. The blueberry bushes blend in quite well with the salal and the deciduous and evergreen huckleberry. We’ve tucked vine maples in along the perimeter in a few places and added many types of heuchera and lots of mahonia and ferns.”

For edibles, the duo has planted eight blueberry bushes, two each of four different kinds. Mary said they love “the times we can relax outside in the garden, enjoy a meal or just going for a walk to check out what’s happening in the woods.”

Vashon-Maury Audubon will be in the Walker garden to share information about the connections between native plants and birds. Learn from the Vashon Maury Island Garden Club about creating a NWF certified wildlife habitat, which the Walker garden has recently become.
