Vashon Repertory Theatre Presents: The War of the Worlds
By Howard E. Koch, based on the novel by H.G. Wells
This Halloween folks can get spooked the old-fashioned way – with radio theatre. Vashon Repertory Theatre (VRT, once again, joins Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA) and Voice of Vashon (VoV) to broadcast its second radio theatre production. This time it’s a Halloween special, War of the Worlds, just as Orson Welles broadcast it – causing nationwide panic – in 1938.
On October 30, 2020, Vashon Center for the Arts will premiere War of the Worlds streaming on the VCA website and Facebook page at 7:30pm, recorded on the stage of the Kay White Hall. And, on Halloween night, October 31st, Voice of Vashon will broadcast the War of the Worlds radio play online and on KVSH 101.9FM at 7 and 11pm.
War of The Worlds is a classic piece of radio from the medium’s golden age of theatre of the mind. The production, its acting and its sound effects were so convincing at the time that thousands of listeners panicked thinking the US was truly being invaded by Martians. Listeners today might find some contemporary themes in the script that allude to our nation being dominated by powerful external forces; the dangers of complacency in the face of existential threats; the impulse of politicians to downplay real danger and – most of all – the power of the media.
This production is a perfect pandemic opportunity to gather the family around the computer, just as families gathered around the radio in 1938, to watch – and hear — the creation of a classic thriller… just to get lost in the magic of radio. And, to get properly spooked on Halloween.
