The Beauty of Small Things – Talk on the Rock with Dr. Elaine Humphrey

January 19 @ 7:00 pm

Taking A Closer Look

When you take a walk at the beach, there are usually so many things to see just with your eyes. When you add in the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), the world opens up to the microscopic. The SEM brings so much art into science.

We will explore in real time the ecosystem that lives on eelgrass. This is part of an ongoing program with IMERSS (Institute of Multidisciplinary Ecological Research of the Salish Sea: IMERSS.org). The main organisms we find are diatoms. Diatoms keep the world alive providing 20 – 50% of the worlds oxygen. They are also an artist’s delight.

Vashon Nature Center’s Executive Director Bianca Perla hosts on Zoom as Dr. Humphrey comes to us live from University of Victoria’s Advanced Microscopy Facility to shows us the awesome power of the Scanning Electron Microscope.
