Solo shows featuring photography, oil paintings, recycled materials and watercolor comprise this collection of artists: Christopher Allen, Jo Robinson, Karlista Rickerson, Kate Munson and Lenard Yen. They are joined by a group of plein air artist who painted the gardens featured in the 2019 VCA Garden Tour.
Christopher Allen “Puzzled” (recycled materials)
As a recycled materials artist, Christopher combines themes and materials from the mad-made world to reflect the natural world and our impact on it. For this show, he is focusing primarily on puzzles, as both backgrounds and as the focal point of the pieces. Not only do the puzzles add an element of texture and depth, but they reflect a deeper truth – the world around us is a puzzling place. Sometimes we don’t know if all the pieces are there and often what’s missing is the most puzzling part.
Jo Robinson “Between the Blossom and the Fruit – the Secret Sex Life of the Food You Eat” (photography)
This show is a photographic celebration of blossoms in the act of becoming fruit. This is not visible to the naked eye, but using close up lense and sophisticated software these photos (which are a composite of 10-40 individual images) show how blossoms transform in fruit. This is a look at the intricate dance of sexual reproduction that has appeared in flowering plants more that 100 million years.
VCA Garden Tour 2019 Painters (watercolor, pastels)
Island landscape painters sat in the beautiful gardens of the 2019 Garden Tour and painted. Janice Wall (pastels) and Jon-Eric Schafer (watercolor) dispersed between the garden to paint the scenery in their own unique interpretation. This exhibition is a collection of their work.
Karlista Rickerson “Beyond the Salt Water Edge” (photography)
Underwater photos taken hear Tramp Harbor, Maury Island Marine Park and Sandy Shores during the 35 years Karlista was scuba diving. The difficulty she was having describing what she had seen during a dive to her family and friends inspired her to have an underwater camera help her. Her exhibition shows the beauty and color of the underwater life right here around Vashon’s shore.
Kate Munson “Inner Landscapes” (watercolor)
Inner Landscapes utilize horizon lines to awaken the infinitesimal infinity of our inner landscapes – earth and sky; above and below; within and without. The intent of this show is to draw the viewer into an unexpected place, use their own inner guidance and enter into a dialogue with the work and their own inner landscape of an embodied life.
Lenard Yen “Embracing Space” (oil paintings)
Lenard’s color abstractions explore space through the discontinuity between hard edges and blended gradients. The juxtaposition creates an illusion of colors moving forward or receding into the distance. The paintings are interpretations of the space between us and also depict the space beyond.
Show runs July 19 to July 28
Gallery Hours (starting July 1) Tues – Fri 12-5pm, Sat & Sun 12-4pm (closed Monday)
