Remembrance Altar

October 26

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 12:00 am, repeating until November 3, 2019

You are invited to join in our community Remembrance Altar, an installation at VCA to honor those who have passed before us. The veneration of the dead, including one’s ancestors, is based on love and respect for the deceased. It is practiced across many cultures and spiritual traditions

This type of altar is steeped in tradition and is in accordance to a particular time of year during which we honor our Ancestors and others who have had a significant impact on our lives. An ancient belief is that at the end of the summer harvest, the “veil between this world and the ‘otherside’ is the thinnest”. It is a natural time to remember, thank, and pay homage to people who have died. The name of the celebratory occasion, which is from October 31 – November 2nd,has numerous names depending on the culture or spiritual belief, including Dias De Los Muertos, Samhein, Day of the Dead, or All Souls day.

A common theme through the varied traditions is to create a space to honor and connect with the spirits or memories of the dead. The Altar provides a place to meditate, pray, contemplate and dwell in memories. You can come alone, with friends or family.

We invite individuals in the community to leave something on the altar that represents the being you are honoring. Many people include a photo of or message for their family members, ancestors, dear friends and/or pets. All are welcome to participate.

The Altar will be outside and covered, but exposed to the weather. We expect it to be treated with respect and considered sacred. We suggest you laminate photos for their protection. We invite you bring something that is representative of your loved ones, however know that the altar is not locked or guarded. Please refrain from adding food to the altar because of animals and insects.

The installation will be complete and ready for you to add your items by Saturday October 26th. The Altar will be part of our Dias De Los Muertos celebration Saturday November 2nd. We ask that all personal items be picked up by Sunday November 3rd or Monday November 4th at the latest.
