Enjoy an evening with poets and photographers – as they bring their artistry alive with a poetry reading and photographers’ talk of their process in creating their images for the “The Lexicon of Light” art exhibition. The event is free.
The Lexicon of Light transformed personal impressions of poetry into photographic images. The project paired a team of 16 photographers with 12 individual poems. Photographers created artwork that reflects their inspiration and impressions from their assigned poem. All poems were authored by Vashon Island poets. Also included is “Last” by the late poet Ina Whitlock who was assigned multiple photographers for their interpretation of her poem.
The Lexicon of Light— is an exercise of ‘reverse ekphrastic’ (pronounced like ‘fantastic’) which is unique as typically poets write ekphrastic poems about artwork, instead of the other way around.
Bringing the poems alive in a poetry reading feels “fantastic.” The evening is an interesting interplay of artistry, truly a lexicon—or language—of light, between two artistic disciplines.
Those who attended the VCA November 2018 poetry reading were so enthusiastic, they asked for more, which inspired Michael Elenko (photographer) and Susan Lynch (poet) to recreate the experience in this new way.
