December VCA Gallery
- Miniature Show (in Koch Gallery)
- Bill Rives (photography in the Atrium)
- Holiday Jewelry Show (in the Gift Shop)
It is December and the 13thconsecutive year for Vashon Center for the Arts to host the annual Miniature Show. Fabulous artistic talent, all in 36″ sq inches or less.
Miniature art or painting in little is a genre that focuses on art (especially painting, engraving and sculpture) with a long history that dates back to the scribes of the medieval ages. Composition, perspective and color are as important as in larger paintings. Traditionally what differentiates Miniature art from simply a ‘small’ painting is the level of detail, some of which must be viewed with a magnifying glass. Artists work in wood, paint, mixed media, photography, fiber, clay, and more.
VCA’s show includes 2-D and 3-D, with one simple guideline – they do not exceed 6”x6” for 2-D and
6”x6”x6” for 3-D in size. The collection is as varied as the artists participating. This exhibition is a demonstration of great Vashon art, all “in the small”; perfect for a holiday gift or that special nook in your home.

“Wild Places” is a celebration of beauty and meaning in the natural world. This collection of images is from wild places on Earth where the natural rhythms of life and time play out free of human intervention. “We come there as silent observers to absorb nature’s splendor and reflect on the deeper meanings of our own existences,” says Bill. Some are vast in scale and remote from human habitation, while others are close at hand in the meadows and forests next to our homes. He continues, “It is time that we celebrate their existence now because, sadly, these great treasures are rapidly disappearing as the burgeoning global population and excessive consumption lay claim to this important part of our heritage.” The selections for the show come primarily from the Glacier Bay wilderness in Alaska, the Osa Peninsula tropical rainforest of Costa Rica, the wilds of Zambia and the Sonoran Desert, all places Bill explores on foot and by kayak with his camera.
