Welcome to Vashon Center for Dance!

Vashon Center for Dance (VCD) is honored to have served the Vashon Community for more than 2 decades. Whether students are pursuing a career in dance, or study dance because they love it, all students are provided the same excellence in training in a supportive, challenging, and nurturing environment. Confidence, dedication, self-motivation and creative thinking are qualities and skills we seek to instill our students – qualities that will serve them well in all aspects of their lives. Our 2 spacious studios are in the historic Oddfellows Hall, which we refer to as the “Blue Heron Education Center”. We are currently working to update our facility to have better air circulation for when we are permitted to move indoors, depending on phase 3 or 4 restrictions and requirements around dance studios. In the meantime, all classes will be conducted online via Zoom.

VCA is proud to offer scholarships! Please click the link below for more information.

Workshop Description

Jessica's love of jazz, ballet, and street jazz creates a unique blend of contemporary movement that allows dancers to play with connection and expression. She aims to invite dancers to dig within themselves to discover their own artistic voice using honesty and vulnerability. A focus of musicality, texture, connection, and intention allows the dancer to play with the way the movement is experienced, seen, and felt by both the performer and the observer. Dance is more than executing moves. Dance is a feeling, an expression, storytelling, and individual artistry. Jessica creates a unique blend of movement to allow dancers to play with connection and expression. She aims to invite dancers to dig within themselves to discover their own artistic voice using honesty, vulnerability, and confidence. Utilizing the momentary connection through Zoom allows the dancer to discover and nurture their relationship to dance expression as it is portrayed on film cultivating a connection to the camera, to expand their energy and movement to be felt through a screen, and to connect deeply to themselves as they express and perform.

Ballet 3 ONLINE Class

Ballet 3 ONLINE Class
Mondays, Jan 4 - Mar 22 | 3:30-4:30 pm
Tuition: $180
Instructor: Madeline Morser
Location: Online via Zoom

This 12 week session of Ballet 3 (via Zoom) will focus heavily on proper alignment and placement. To achieve this via Zoom, class will focus on fewer barre exercises so as to spend more time on each one: exercises will be done once with the teacher, once without the teacher. Students’ full bodies should be in view during class so as to facilitate specific, individual corrections. Barre will be followed by a brief stretch and several non-traveling center exercises so as to accommodate small spaces. To emphasize a sense of progress and achievement, we will build a center adagio phrase to be added onto each week and hopefully filmed over Zoom for anyone interested at the end of the session!

Students’ whole bodies should be in view during class so as to facilitate specific, individual corrections (this is paramount for understanding technical concepts and moving towards level 5). Following barre, we will be learning one or two variations from classical ballets to be worked on throughout the session!

Instructor: Madeline Morser
Location: Online via Zoom

Parameters are the bread and butter of good choreography. Ironic though it may seem, our minds light up with possibilities once limitations are set. Choreographing for the camera or for a live Zoom performance provides endless limitations and therefore endless possibilities to be unlocked. This class will focus on bringing a list of choreographic tools and styles to life through the lens of a camera and/or a box on Zoom and similar platforms. The jungle of our homes, yards, parks, and beaches is in fact a choreographers best friend, but to a beginning choreographer it can look like a nightmare. The goal of this class is to shine a light on simple ways to play with, enjoy, and create within the world of social distancing.
