Vashon Center for the Arts and Open Space for Arts and Community continue their collaboration, planning to produce 14/48 Vashon: The World’s Quickest Island Theater Festival over the weekend of October 18-20, 2018 at VCA’s Katherine L White Hall.
This will be the third incarnation of this community-building, chops-busting, art-generating adventure.
What is it? Over the festival weekend a never-before-assembled ensemble of island artists collaborates to produce 14 world premiere short plays in 48 hours. Written, directed, scored, teched, and presented over one rotation of the Earth, each day sees seven plays spring up overnight, like mushrooms. United by a randomly generated theme, each group offers a unique spectrum of viewpoints on our contemporary condition. Seven writers, seven directors, musicians, designers, and dozens of actors test their craft and their courage as they race the clock to bring Vashon audiences the freshest plays of the day.

The Role of a 14/48 Actor
The Festival is a co-production of Open Space for Arts and Community and Vashon Center for the Arts to be presented in the Kay White Hall at VCA over the weekend of October 18th-20th, 2018.
As an actor, you are committing to perform in two 10 minute plays over the course of the weekend, one to be performed twice on Friday night, the second one twice on Saturday. You are also expected to attend the introductory, all-festival meeting on Thursday evening.
THE ACTORS DEAL
Actors’ Schedule for the Weekend
Thursday, October 18, 7:00 pm: All Company Meeting – At Vashon Center for the Arts. Introductions, How it all works, drawing of the theme (selected at random by the 14/48 artists), writers get their assignments.
Friday Morning at 9:15 am – Actors’ call at Open Space for Arts and Community. You will be randomly assigned to one of the seven plays to be performed that day. Rehearsals begin!
Friday Evening at 6:00 pm – All Company Meeting. Get the final news of the day and rev up for performance.
Friday Evening – Performances at 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM
Saturday Morning at 9:15 am – Repeat with new plays written on a theme randomly selected from the Friday early show audience.
Saturday Evening – Performances at 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM
After the shows, party until the wee hours. Seal the new bonds you’ve made and dance off any remaining energy you may have.
In some ways, actors are the most courageous participants, as you welcome the challenge to portray whatever randomly comes your way with no foreknowledge of the commitment. In exchange for your bravery, we feed you, offer liquid courage, and a safe place to play throughout the weekend.
At the end of the festival, we expect participants to feel accomplished, inspired, more intimately connected with the community of participating artists, and exhausted in the good way that you feel after facing a unique challenge and meeting it head on.
