The spring concert will showcase two iconic English composers from different eras. Benjamin Britten’s pastoral Simple Symphony is based on 8 melodies the composer wrote as a child. The work is full of youthful exuberance and joy with the rich sonorities for which Britten is known.
Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen is a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Written at the height of Purcell’s abilities it contains some of the finest music for the theater written during the Baroque era. The Fairy Queen runs the full range from laugh out loud silliness to delicate beauty to grand triumph and everything in between.
