This is the text of the call we sent out soliciting donations for our 2018 auction

. . . . . . . . .

It’s barely spring and our 2018 VCA auction plans (September 21 and 22) has me musing the autumn words of Emily Bronte.

Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.

In 2017 our auction raised approximately $125,000 in scholarship funds which makes it possible to say “yes” to any island resident who wants to take a class but needs some financial assistance to do so.  We also raised $6,200 in earmarked contributions that went to refitting our dance studio with brand new mirrors (which look fabulous by the way).  Finally, we raised $135,000 which helps fund our general operating budget.  All of this happened because of the generous support of contributors like you.

I’m writing today to ask if you would consider donating a work of art to our 2018 auction to help us support arts education, visual arts, dance, performing arts, and Vashon Artist in the Schools on Vashon.  Each of these programs has a decades-long history of excellence that has been a benefit to artists, students, patrons, and even casual observers.

In making this donation request, I realize many in the local community have found reasons to be disappointed with VCA, and you may be one of those people.  I know for a fact we dropped the ball last year in our post auction communications. Being anything less than grateful and gracious isn’t acceptable and if we disappointed you in any way I hope you’ll accept my personal apology. All I can say is we can and will do much better.

I’ll follow this note with more detail about when and how to submit a donation.  In the meantime, thank you for your past support of VCA.  I am committed to the idea of earning your support in the future and hope you will be part of our 2018 auction by donating a piece of art and by joining us to celebrate on September 21 or 22.

Sincerely,

Kevin Hoffberg

Director of Operations
