JUST THE FACTS, MA’AM

June 25, 2012

Good morning, Vashon.  There were so many letters of support during the comment period for the building permit process sent to King County DDES, some of which we’ve published here, but there were also issues raised about what the campus is, what it will look like, and what it will mean to Vashon.  Molly Reed, Executive Director of VAA,  has addressed  these concerns in the letter linked below.

Molly wrote to us:

“The following information addresses some issues raised during the public comment period for our permitting application to the County.  We sent a letter to Mark Mitchell at the Department of Development and Environmental Services which included similar information.”

Hi Molly (and Verna)! Having worked for DDES for fifteen years I’m (still) very familiar with both the issues and the language found in your letter. That said, I’d like to focus on a different aspect of your presentation here, because I’m not sure most mortals would read all the way through your letter, let alone have it make much sense.

    “..what it will look like..”

As I’ve said elsewhere here, I think the architect’s renderings that you are presenting to the public perform an unintentional and inadvertent disservice in that, although I understand them to be conceptual renderings for display at presentations, too many people may take them to be literal depictions of just exactly how the new Performing Arts Center will sit at that intersection.

Executive summary: the renderings I’ve seen simply do not place the Performing Arts Center accurately relative to required street setbacks.

Here’s my public album on Facebook where I scribble on several images and discuss the appearance versus the reality of what that intersection will look like.

      Hi John,

Here is some feedback from LMN:

“There are numerous renderings of the project with different station points and vegetation treatment. Not knowing which drawing(s) John Sage is looking at makes it challenging to give a specific response. However, I can say that the building was carefully located in the digital model at the correct spot relative to the property line and setbacks. The site design includes some trees and other plantings that are located in the right-of-way at the current location of pavement that abuts McFeeds.”

Thanks again, John – hope this helps.
