TOOLS OF THE TRADE

June 4, 2012

Drama Dock is Vashon’s own community theater, staging wonderful plays on the Island for over 35 years.   Artistic Director, Elizabeth Ripley, has recently been running the show with great success.

One thing Elizabeth is especially passionate about is Drama Dock Youth Theater Initiative, in which she teaches our young Islanders, ages 11 to 18, not just acting, but the fine points of stagecraft, from sets, to costumes, to lighting.

We love the idea of giving youth an opportunity to work behind the scenes. These are often the kids who have no interest in being on the stage. And what an opportunity they will have at VCA. We’re going to have a place for them to learn stagecraft.  They’ll be able to work in a real, fully functional theater with a scene dock; a lighting tension grid, catwalk, stage wings, an orchestra pit, prop rooms, a sound and light booth, and backstage areas;  all to create the magic of theater. They will have access to a professional lighting board, scoops, and spots and strips.  What these creative kids will be able to do when given the proper tools will be a joy to behold. We look forward to partnering with Elizabeth and the Drama Dock Youth Theater Initiative. It’s just one more thrilling advantage and opportunity we will have when our art’s campus is complete. And how our children will prosper!
